Thoudam Kalpana defends title, Hemam Chaoba wins gold medal in World Police and Fire Games 2017

 

The judoka who represented Indian Police in the Games won the medal in women’s 52kg category. Daughter of Th Moduchandra from Singjamei Makha Nameirakpam Leikai has represented India many times and won several medals. At the national and international levels, she has bagged 29 gold medals, 7 silver medals and 5 bronze medals of which she has won 8 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals at the international levels.

Earlier, the employee of Indo -Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) brought laurels to India in major events of games as well. She won silver medal in Asian U20 Judo Championships 2007 Hyderabad in India, bronze medal in IJF Judo World Cup 2010, Tashkent in Uzbekistan, gold medal in Commonwealth Judo Championships 2010 in Singapore , Lusofonia Games 2014, Goa in India, bronze medal in Commonwealth Games 2014, Glasgow in Scotland. The Indian judoka from Manipur also won gold medal in the biennial Games when it was held in 2015 at Fairfax County, Virginia in the USA.

It may be pointed out that Thoudam Kalpana became the first Indian judoka medallist by winning bronze medal in the World Cup (women) Judo-2010 by defeating Nazaraova Shokhida of Uzbekistan in Tashkent.

Laishram Nirupama who also won bronze medal in the last edition of the Games bettered her medal this time. The CRPF judoka won silver medal in women’s 63kg category.

Indian judokas have done well in the Games winning 7 medals – 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals. Indian men judokas bagged 2 gold and 1 bronze medals with Navjot Chana winning gold medal in men’s 60kg, Avtar Singh also winning gold medal in men’s 90kg. Sahil Pathania won bronze medal in 100kg category.

In women’s competitions, Thoudam Kalpana (52kg), Laishram Nirupama (63kg), Ankita (78kg) and Rajwinder Kaur (+78kg) won gold, silver, bronze and silver medals respectively.

On the other hand, Hemam Chaoba representing Indian Police also won gold medal in women’s 63kg in boxing. Daughter of Hemam Bichandra and Hemam Bina from Moirang Hemam Leikai won her first ever international gold medal in the Games. The employee of the BSF beat her opponent from Mexico to win the medal. She won silver medal in National Games 2013, Kerala.

In women’s 54kg category, Maisnam Meenakumari also won gold medal in the Games. The National Games 2013, Kerala.winner boxer has won several medals for India eralier. She also won Best Boxer award in national championships.

Indian team added another gold medal in women’s boxing. In women’s 81+kg category, Kavita Chahal won gold medal. The Arjuna awardee boxer beat Claire Horgan of London Metro Police Force of England 3-0 in the final to win the gold medal for India.

In men’s boxing, Pardeep and Sankar Appa also won gold medals in the Games.

In Archery, Gurumayum Robert won a gold medal for India.

The World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) is a biennial athletic event, open to active and retired law enforcement and fire service personnel throughout the world. The WPFG Federation is an arm of the California Police Athletic Federation (CPAF), an American non-profit organization. The first World Police & Fire Games were held in 1985 in San Jose, California, USA, with nearly 5,000 competitors.
