Services rule the ring as Manipur boxers shine in the 1st National Youth Boxing Championship 2016-17

Services boxers dominated the boxing competition at the 1st National Youth Boxing Championship 2016-17. The all men’s boxing team won team champion in the championship. Among the Services team, three gold medallists are from Manipur. Sagolsem Barun from Nambol and Ch Wilson men’s 49kg and 52kg categories won gold medals respectively. It was not so tough for international boxer Etash Khan. Son of a farmer, Etash who got the inspiration of boxing from his elder brother, Ibrahim, a former sub-junior champion won the national title by winning gold medal in men’s 56kg category. In his early days, as there was no coaching centre in the vicinity, he took an early morning (4am) bus to reach Imphal where he trained under Kishan Singh. He represented India in Asian Youth Boxing Championships 2016. Pukhram Narajit who was India’s first World Military Games boxing champion was the team coach.

 

On the other hand, for Manipur it was not bad. In the championship Pheiroijam Brighter won gold medal in men’s 64kg category while M Ranbir won bronze medal in men’s 52kg category.

In women’s section, Th Ojibala, Kh Tilotama Chanu and Sh Rojita won bronze medals in 57kg, 60kg and 69kg categories respectively.

Tensubam Shikandar was Manipur team coach.
