Sarjubala Shamjetsabam clinches 1st Elite Women National Boxing Championship 2016 title

Former world youth boxing champion Sarjubala Shamjetsabam won gold medal in women’s 48kg category at the 1st Elite Women National Boxing Championship 2016 which was held at Haridwar in Uttarakhand from 19th to 24th November 2016.

The gutsy boxer from Manipur beat Rebecca Lal of Mizoram by 3-2, Delhi’s Pooja Tokas by 3-2 and Rajesh Narwal of Railways Sports Promotion Board by 5-0 in the semi final. The world number 3 ranked boxer Sarjubala eventually beat Krishna Thapa of Uttarakhand to clinch her senior women’s national title. This is her fourth national gold overall and third consecutive title at senior level.

In the championship, Maisnam Meena Kumari representing Kerala won bronze medal in women’s bantam weight (54kg) category. Manipur’s Y Sandhyarani in 51kg category upstaged two-time World Championships bronze-medallist Chhoto Laura in the opening round and Rajasthan’s Neha Bhambu via a Technical Knockout in the third round of her pre-quarterfinal contest before losing in the quarter final.
