Potshangbam Umeshori  bags two silver medals in Commonwealth (Youth, Junior and Senior) Weightlifting Championships 2017

India’s medal winning performance continued as lifters of all categories displayed fine performances at the ongoing Commonwealth (Youth, Junior and Senior) Weightlifting Championships 2017 in Australia. India’s Potshangbam Umeshori  bagged two silver medals in the youth girl’s and junior women’s 63kg category on day three of the competition. She has become the 4th weightlifter from Manipur to have won medal in the championships.


Konsam Ormila, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu have won gold medals in their respective categories in the championships. Mirabai and Sanjita have also qualified for the next year’s Commonwealth Games to be held at the same venue.

Earlier, Konsam Ormila won gold medal by lifting 57kg in snatch and 76kg in clean & jerk for an overall total of 133kg to become champion in youth girl’s 44kg category on the opening day of the championships which is being held at Gold Coast City, Australia.

Olympian Saikhom Mirabai Chanu also clinched  a gold medal and broke her own record at the Commonwealth Senior Weightlifting Championships 2017 in senior women’s 48kg weight category by lifting  85kg in snatch and 104kg in clean & jerk for an overall total lift of 189kg. Mirabai and Sanjita qualified for the next year’s Commonwealth Games to be held at the same venue.

Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu who opened the gold account for India in weightlifting competition at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 also made the country proud by winning a gold medal in women’s 53kg category with 85kg in snatch and 110kg in clean & jerk for a total lift of 195kg.

On day three of the championships, Indian lifters added 10 more medals. Muthupandi Raja added three gold and one silver medals to India’s kitty when won top spot in youth boys’ 62kg weight division with a total lift of 260 kg. Erra Deexitha in junior women’s 58kg and Deepak Lather in youth boys’ and junior men’s 69kg categories respectively won gold medals.

Saraswati Rout in women’s 58kg, Vandana Gupta senior women’s 63kg and Deepak Lather in senior men’s 69kg were other medallists of India on day three.
