Be it archery or boxing or football or hockey or wushu or weighlifting or martial arts, etc, Manipur has been one of the biggest sporting hubs of India. The sporting culture of the land has been its biggest strength provider in maintaining its unique position in the country. Although the land is small in geographical size and population, it is quite large in sporting achievements, both qualitatively and quantitatively.
Now let us come to the bodybuilding. After Leitanthem Dinesh opened the gold account for India and becoming world champion followed by another gold medal winning performance by Laitonjam Rishikanta on the opening day of the 9th WBPF World Bodybuilding & Physique Sports Championships 2017 Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Manipur bodybuilder Nongmaithem Sarbo Singh has won a bronze medal for the country. The Railways bodybuilder won bronze medal in men’s 75kg category. The five times national champion won his first ever world championships medal in this edition.
On the opening day, Leitanthem Dinesh and Laitonjam Rishikanta won gold medals for India in junior men’s below 75kg and junior men’s above 75kg categories respectively.
The Manipuri women bodybuilders were not behind in winning medals yesterday. Former World and Asian Bodybuilding Championships medalists Thingbaijam Sarita and Mamota Yumnam won silver and bronze medals respectively. Thingbaijam Sarita who won bronze medal in the 51st Asian Bodybuilding & Physique Sports Championship 2017, Korea could better her performance by winning a silver medal in women’s below 55kg while Mamota Yumnam won bronze medal in the championships.
Former World and Asian Bodybuilding Championships medalist Kongbrailatpam Rebita and Chandam Indira won 4th and 5th places in women’s above 55kg and master men’s above 60kg categories respectively.
