Olympian Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won a gold medal and broke her own record at the Commonwealth Senior Weightlifting Championships 2017 being held at Gold Coast, Australia.
The Rio Olympian Saikhom Mirabai lifted 85kg in snatch and 104kg in clean & jerk for an overall total lift of 189kg to finish on top of the podium in senior women’s 48kg weight category. Besides winning the medal, she also broke Commonwealth record in snatch event with a lift of 85kg, bettering her own record by one kilogramme.
In women’s 53kg category, Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 champion Khumukcham Sanjita also clinched gold for India with a total lift of 195kg. She lifted 85kg in snatch and 110kg in clean & jerk.
With these winning performances, both has qualified for the Commonwealth Games, to be held at the same venue in 2018. Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu and Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won gold and silver medals respectively in women’s 48kg at the Commonwealth Games 2014, Glasgow.
India’s woman senior lifter Matsa Santoshi won silver medal in women’s 58kg category with a total lift of 194kg (86kg+108kg). Gururaja bagged a bronze medal with a total lift of 246kg (107kg + 139kg) in men’s 56kg category.
Indian lifters did more well in junior competitions so far in the championships. Ananya Patil bagged two medals in youth girls’ and junior women’s 53kg weight category. Jeremy Lalrinnunga also won grabbed two gold medals in youth boys’ and junior men’s 56kg category. Jhilli Dalabehera won a gold medal with an overall lift of 154kg (67kg + 87kg) in 48kg category of women’s junior.
Indian juniors continued the momentum as Sneha Soren clinched a gold medal in youth girls’ 48kg category by lifting a total weight of 138kg (60kg + 78kg). Zakhuma won silver medal in youth boys’ 56kg division with a total lift of 215kg (95kg+120kg).
