Meiraba wins his first medal in senior international badminton tournament, bags bronze medal for India

 

Maisnam Meiraba Luwang made a remarkable start in his senior international level by winning a bronze medal in Thailand. The 14 years old Indian boy from Manipur won the medal in men’s single open event at the YONEX SHERA ROZA BTY International Championships 2017 held under BWF Asia Badminton from April 4 to 9, 2017 at Bangkok in Thailand. The championships were organized by Badminton Association of Thailand.

The number entry of the participants was 1400 of which entry in men’s single event was 128 in numbers while and the number of entry in under 17 boy’s single event was 202, mostly from all over Asian countries.

In the championships, Meiraba got a bye in the 1st round and reached the 2nd round where defeated Phakorn Chotphinit  of host Thailand in straight set by 21/11 and 21/15 points. He beat Phatti Phratchayapara Dorn who is a Thailand’s ranked number 9 shuttler by another straight set with 21/19 and 21/17 points in 3rd round. In 4th round (pre quarter final), he beat Wicharapong Kharnchankeeree of Thailand by 21/13 and 21/13 points. He comfortably beat Tudsapol Thawornwong by 21/10 and 21/15 points before losing to Prarivawat Thongnuam who is a Thailand’s ranked number shuttler by 12/21 and 18/21 points.

In under 17 boy’s single event, Meiraba defeated Arounsavath Sipaseuth of Laos with 21/3 and 21/9 points in 1st round, Phakorn Chotphinit of Thailand by 21/9 and 21/9 points in the 2nd round, Pharat Tangsrirapeephan of Thailand (Ranked no 5) by 21/19 and 21/17points, fellow Indian Ramesh Adarsh Subramaniam by 21/14 and 21/6 points in 4th round. He lost to Uchino Harute of Japan by 21/19 and 21/18 points in quarter final.

In the same event of under 17 boy’s single, Salam Bidyasagar beat Zhuang Hongkai of China by 21/6 and 21/17points in 1st round, Thanaphat Phuraesri of Thailand by 21/11 and 21/18 points in 2nd round, Thnanoon Jjdjaipuree of Thailand by 21/7 and 22/20 points. He lost Kritsada Goram of Thailand by  21/18,19/21 and 21/19 points.

Another Manipuri boy Yangkhom Punshiba also participated in the under 17 boy’s single event. He beat Manatam Konhrang of Thailand by 21/6 and 21/10 points in the 1st round, Nobphawjt Arunphanjitroed of Thailand by 21/9 and 21/12 points in the 2nd round before losing in the 3rd round.

In the 1st main round, Punshiba beat Naruesaed Raoed Pong of Thailand with 21/10 and 21/12 points, Jjtat Aeansakulrat of Thailand with 21/2 and 21/3 points. He lost to fellow Ramesh Adarsh Subramaniam by  21/14 and 22/20 points.

In under 17 boys’ double event, Yanghom Punshiba and Salam Bidyasagar also participat, however lost Siripom K and Paramed Promsarin of Thailand by 18/21 and 21/23 points in 1st round.
