London Olympic Games bronze medalist and five times world champion M C Mary Kom got a bye in the preliminary stage to advance to the quarterfinal as nine Indian boxers qualified for the quarterfinals at the ongoing Ulaanbaatar Cup 2017 at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Mary Kom who returned to the competitive action after one year break will take on the winner of the bout between Russia’s Anna Aedma and Korea’s Chol Mi Bang to reach women’s fly (48-51 kg) semi final bout which will take place on 23rd June.
Laishram Devendro who competed in men’s fly (52 kg) also got bye in the preliminary stage and will box against Yusupov Dimitrii of Russia today in quarterfinal to advance to the semi final.

It was the same case as Thailand International Tournament in 2015 and 2017 gold medalist Shyam Kumar Kakara and Ankush Dahiya also entered quarter final after getting byes in the preliminary stages of men’s Light Fly (46-49kg) and Light (60kg) respectively. Shyam Kumar Kakara will meet Mongolia’s Enkhmandakh Kharkhuu while 7th Asian Youth Championships 2016 silver medalist Ankush Dahiya will be up against Dulgunn of Mongolia in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Hussam Uddin Mohammed who won silver medal in 68th Strandja Memorial Memorial Boxing Tournament beat Almanbet Alibekov of Kyrgyzstan to enter the quarterfinals of men’s bantam (56kg) category. He will face China’s Ma Xin Ming tomorrow.
In men’s Light Welter (64kg), Thailand International Tournament 2017 bronze medalist Rohit Tokas defeated Russian Dorjo Dakhaev to progress to the quarterfinals where he will be up against Mongolian boxer Chinzorig Baatarsukh.
In men’s welter (69kg) Duryodhan Singh (69kg) has also made to the quarter finals straightaway as the size of the draw was small. He will meet Byamba Erdene Otgonbaatar of Mongolia in his quarterfinal bout.

India had to meet its first defeat in the tournament as Jaideep (75kg) bowed out of the tournament in men’s middle (75kg) category as he lost to Zhan Chao Feng of China in the preliminary round.
In women’s section, besides Mary Kom, Asian Women Boxing Championships in 2010 bronze medalist Priyanka Chaudhary (60kg) defeated Bolortuul Tumurkhuyag of Mongolia in women’s light (57-60kg) and will face Russian boxer Alekxandra Ordina in quarterfinal to get a place in the semifinal.
Young boxer Kalawanti who was the 9th Junior Women (Youth) Boxing Championship 2016 gold medalist also registered her against Huo Run Hui of China in the first bout. She will take on Iusupova Liubov in the quarterfinal tomorrow
