Manipur polo team crowned champion of the 8th Manipur International Polo Tournament 2014

Defending champion Manipur (India-B) once again won the 8th Manipur International Polo Tournament 2014 by defeating South Africa 7-5. Both Manipur and South Africa played very competitively. But it was Manipur which won the final battle. South Africa entered the final by defeating the runners up of the previous edition the USA by 7-6. Manipur which represented as India-B beat India-A by similar scores.

Manipur International Polo Tournament 2014 was organised as part of the Sangai Festival 2014 at the oldest polo ground of the world Mapal Kangjeibung. Before the final match was played, tent pegging and Arambai Throwing skills were displayed by the young horse riders.

In the final match played, P Ojit of India – B (Manipur) netted 3 goals, followed M Jawan scoring a goal in the first chukker while strikes from South Africa’s Selly James, John Eustaci and a freak own goal from Pradeep Kumar of India-B (Manipur) made the scoreline 4-3 by the end of the first chukker.

S Bimol and P Ojit of India-B (Manipur) slotted home one goal each to make 2-0 in the second chukker. P Ojit of India – B (Manipur) struck his fifth goal while South Africa’s John Eustaci and Cameroon Chuble netted one goal each in the third chukker. Both team however failed to score in the fourth chukker.

Stallon of MPSC won the best pony title and received a cash prize of Rs 15,000 while Forty (Khurai Polo Club) and Lamdanba (Nambul Mapal Club) bagged the second and third titles and received a cash prize of 10,000 and 5,000 respectively being sponsored by Sarungbam (O) Premi
