Lily Chanu Mayengbam will play for India in the 2017 FIH Women Hockey World League Round 2

International hockey player Lily Chanu Mayengbam has been selected to represent India in the FIH Women Hockey World League Round 2 which will start on 1st April 2017 at West Vancouver in Canada. The Indian midfielder has joined the team and left for West Vancouver from New Delhi.

The Indian women’s team is led by striker Rani and Vice Captain Deep Grace Ekka and will compete against five other teams Belarus, Canada, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, Chile and Uruguay for top honours in the league. Captain Rani before departure stated that “We go in as the top ranked team and we are confident we will finish in the top spot. We are going there 10 days before the start of the tournament so we will have enough time to get used to the turf, climate. We also play two practice matches which will help us fine tune further.”

The captain of the team which registered a comprehensive series win over Belarus by 5-0 continued to say that the team worked extremely hard in the national camp at Bhopal under the watchful eyes of Chief Coach Dutchmen Sjoerd Marijne and Analytical Coach Eric Wonink.

The big win over Belarus will be a big advantage for the Indian team which brought in a few variations in their techniques under the new coaches. Vice captain Deep Grace Ekka said, “this group has been together for a while now and we know each others’ strengths and weaknesses. I feel the Series win against Belarus was a big motivator.”

The Hockey Women’s World League Semi Finals will be held from June 21 to July at Brussels in Canada and from July 8 to 22 at Johannesburg in South Africa respectively.

As for the FIH Women Hockey World League Round 2, India, Belarus and Uruguay are grouped in Pool A. India will play its first pool A match on 1st April of 2017 against Uruguay and next meet Belarus on 2nd April in its second play. Host Canada, Mexico, Chile and Trinidad and Tobago are in Pool B. The league will start from April 1 to 9.
